Cosi fan Tutte
For this production at the Coliseum, Mozart's comic opera has been set in a seaside town in the fifties. It works, but the main reason for this choice is to allow the addition of a troupe of circus performers into the mix. On top of operating an assortment of carnival rides for the primary characters, they perform acrobatics and swallow fire in the background, adding some visual excitement.
The four lovers are all sung well, but the real standout performance is Mary Bevan as Despina. In addition to emoting well as a motel maid, at various points she sings in both a faux-german accent and a faux-texas accent which is just astonishingly audacious.
Cosi fan tutte is at the Coliseum until the 6th of July 2014.
