Kim Tschang-Yeul at Hyundai Gallery
Having no previous knowledge of Kim Tschang-Yeul (김창열), I was lucky to see one of his's paintings in the permanent collection at Leeum and luckier still to discover that he is currently the subject of an exhibition at Gallery Hyundai in Seoul. The exhibition is spread over two gallery locations, one showing his earlier works which date from the 1970s (most of his paintings before this period have been destroyed), and the second space showcases his more recent works.
Kim Tschang-Yeul paints water drops. As far as I can tell, this is to the exclusion of everything else. For the artist, this devotion to water drops allows him to achieve a technical mastery of his subject. For the viewer, this singular focus allows us to concentrate on the way in which each painting and each droplet is differtent. They vary in their distribution, shape, color, and (most impressively) the quality of the light that passes through each droplet. It is difficult not to admire Kim Tschang-Yeul's dilligence, which has resulted in some works of great beauty.
Kim Tschang-Yeul is at Gallery Hyundai in Seoul until the 25th of September, 2013
