Primrose: Early Colour Photography in Russia

The best part of this exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery are the earliest works which use hand-tinting and painting on photographs to create early mixed media images. These techniques add colour, but in a way that renders the scenes with a curious flatness. At times it is difficult to tell if you are looking at a photograph, a painting, or some sort of composite image, particularly when looking at landscapes.

The second half of the exhibition deals with the revolution and its impact on photography in Russia. These images are more interesting for their historical context rather than their artistry.

Primrose is at The Photographers' Gallery until the 19th of October 2014
