Yayoi Kusama at Victoria Miro

kusama love for pumpkins

This exhibition is part of a larger showcase of Kusama's recent output spread over two different sites. All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins is a small mirrored chamber with illuminated pumpkin lights covered in the black polka dots for which Kusama is well known. Chandelier of Grief is similarly set in a mirrored chamber, a single chandelier with flickering bulbs hanging from the ceiling.

In both cases, the mirrors and lighting create an infinite, repetitious topography which can produce otherworldly sensations in the viewer. In Chandelier for example, one gets the sense of sinking into a dark void with an ocean of light rippling overhead. It's a powerful effect, but due to the popularity of the show, visitors are not given more than a few seconds each to experience it.

Yayoi Kusama is at Victoria Miro until the 30th of July, 2016.
